No one in the UK seems to know the answer to our problem so we are turning to you guys in desparation.

We have a bad smell of sewage that comes up in our kitchen. Our plumber thought that the dishwasher ( a Bosch) was draining water so fast that it removed the water from the trap. ( The washing machine also uses the same trap).
He fitted an air vent thingy past the trap that is supposed to relieve the pressure and stop the trap being drained of its water. Needless to say we still get the smell.

The toilet is upstairs above the kitchen but we don't seem to get the smell up there.

Does anyone have any ideas please? It's ruining our dinner parties!

 

Sounds like you have a vent blockage problem with your sink drain, creating a vacuum that pulls the water from your trap. Snake out the vents on your roof to see if that doesn't help the trap hold water. You shouldn't get any sewer gas smell from the small vent under the sink that your plumber installed, because it just vents the sink trap when water is run through it. Good Luck!

 

YOU COULD OF EASALY CHECKED THE TRAP AFTER THE DISHWASHER RAN TO SEE IF IT PULLED THE TRAP DOWN BEFORE ANY WORK WAS DONE.
IF THE KITCHEN IS OVER A CRAWL SPACE THAT DOESENT GET LOOKED AT A LOT I WOULD CHECK THERE TO SEE IF THERE IS A LEAKY DRAIN LINE THAT MAY BE FILLING THE CRAWL SPACE WITH FOOD PRODUCT THAT IS ROTTING.

 

Do you know for a fact the sewer gas is coming from the kitchen sink? Or is it in that general vicinity. One thing to make sure that is the problem is put the plugs in and fill it with water. This will do two things. If the smell goes away you know exactly where the problem is and you have a temp solution to help alviate the smell when the sink is not in use and while you work on figuring out the solution with the suggestions here. It will also help if the smell does not go away as you will know to look somewhere else.
