My toilet flushes but you need to hold the handle down. The flush is slow and sometimes does not handle all the waste. It's as though the flush is in "slow motion". There is a choking sound when the water flushes down.

Sounds like you need a new flush handle and flapper, also you may need to have the bowl snaked out.

try cleaning out the siphon jet in the bowl. It's what sends the major force of water into it when you flush and sometimes becomes clogged with water deposits or calcification.

What is the siphon jet? How do you clean it?

If you have been using bowl cleaning tablets in your tank, this could cause a problem like you are having. I was to the point of replacing a toilet when I noticed small pieces of the cleaning tablets suddenly come from underneath the rim of the bowl when I tried to flush the toilet. After that the toilet flushed fine. Apparently these tablets (which are supposed to eventually dissolve completely) can get sucked into the flapper hole along with the water after they become very small. These small pieces can plug the holes underneath the rim which in turn causes the water to come into the bowl with less volume and force than is required to flush completely. I have since started putting these tablets into plastic mesh bags (like those that oranges come in) and hang the bag over the edge of the tank into the water. The tank lid holds the bag in place.
