Tub drain does not stay open to drain tub

Tub drain will not stay open. How do you replace the tub drain that works with a lever. It keeps closing when you lift it up.

Also, there is no access panel to the back of the tub.

there is a wish bone shaped clip on the back side of the tub overflow plate that hooks into precasted ears that hold it in place and
gives the lever the ability to stay up by it-
self. remove the cover and remove the cotter
pin on the plate that holds the linkage to the back of the over flow plate, now purchase a new plate and you are good to go.
hope that is your problem..
