running or leading toilet

I have a 5 year old house with a toilet that has recently started to run, intermitently. Apparently it's leaking water and then, like a good toilet, is filling the tank as needed. I can only imagine it's probably something simple but I am plumbing illiterate. First, how can I determine what is causing this - identify the source/part? Second, where can I find user friendly, easy to follow directions to correct/fix the problem. Also, this toilet seems to flush hard, but only the first time after a long period of nonuse. It acts as though the suction is really tight. But once flushed, it flushes easier each time after that, until hours of non-use.

Thank you for your help!

Cool

Sounds like you just need to replace the flap in the bottom of the tank that controls water flow to bowl. (Clean seat that flap seals on.) Recommend Kohler brand. Just follow directions on package. Easy fix. Don't worry about how it flushes, as long it flushes o.k. Good Luck!
