I believe you are suppose to use a larger pipe from the main to what point I do not know and then gradually get smaller to the 2nd floor. My main is in the basement. Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated.

Hi Jack
Run 3/4 to the 2nd floor hot and cold, then at each fixture reduce it to 1/2"
What size is the pipe in the basement?

What size is the pipe in the basement? It is 3/4" directly from the main and then turns 1/2" before the water heater and then back to 3/4" it looks like a cobbled mess. The pipe coming out of the main is cpvc and the copper and also some galvanized. The house is 89 years old and in the past 8years was hooked up to rural water and the well plumbing is still in the basement also but it is no longer useable.

If it is all possible get 3/4" pipe to the water heater and like I said run 3/4" pipe and reduce to 1/2" when you come to each fixture.

Thanks for the advice it is greatly appreciated. I have one other question, what do you think about the water surge protectors, do they really work? We have 3 toilets in our house and they are used frequently, so there for when taking a shower upstairs and someone flushes downstairs the water gets pretty hot and we lose water pressure. Would you have any suggestions for this type of problem?

They work and are required by code in new homes. I like using either the Moen Posi-Temp or the Moen Troll shower valves.
So I do say replace them if there is a problem with water surge.
