Replacing a shower head

The house I just bought has and old shower head which does not screw directly off of the pipe that extends from the wall. The pipe ends with a ball fitting that the existing head screws over. Is it difficult to cut the pipe and then refinish it so that it will accept a new shower head? What tools are required or do I need to have a professional come in to fix this?

Any help is appreciated

You don't need to cut anything. Simply unthread the shower arm out of the wall and replace it with one that is threaded on both ends.
