hot water heater

my gas was turned off but now back on and my hot water heater pilot won't light. the heater pilot lights so i know i have gas.
please help

Depending on the physical layout of the plumbing, you could have air in the gas line. Need to hold the control button down long enough (a couple of minutes) to get rid of it, then try lighting the pilot.

A rather common problem but not a major one.
The thermocouple died.

If this minor part is weak to begin with, once allowed to cool when the gas was shut off, they often never work again like in your case.

Contact your local natural gas utility. Most offer an appliance home service. The rep then can check the condition of the part and offer a replacement if needed.
