water heater with no heat
#1

We went away for two weeks and turned all the utilities off at the main valves including gas and water. When we turned it back again NO HOT WATER is coming out. Is there a PILOT that we need to light-up for the gas-water heater? Or any switch that we should turn-on? The stove just work fine so we know that the GAS main valve is really turned on....HELP!!!

Pilot is probably out, on the bottom of water heater there is the opening, remove the cover, look inside, if you see no flame then you need to relite the pilot. There should be a turn dial on the controls, turn it to pilot press and hold it down, hold for a minute or two then with a match while holding down the dial light the pilot, once lit turn the dial to on.
You can also call you local gas company and have them come and light it, most wil do it and not cost you anything.

Next time you leave for 2 weeks, you might want to leave the gas on and simply set the temp. control on the water heater to the "vacation" setting. This will efectively turn the water heater off but keep the pilot light going. If the rest of your gas appliances are faily new, they have ignitors rather than pilot lights, so they will use no gas while you are gone.

It WORKS!!!! Thank YOU for the tip. This website is SOOOOOOOOOO Cool!!!<HR>
I assume that by now you have your pilot lit. However, I read the comment by water heater GUY and must respond. You did not say whether you had natural or propane gas. There is always a danger in holding the RED button down if you have no source of ignition ready to light the pilot. This is especially true with propane gas. It is heavier than air. If you hold that button down for as long as 1 to 2 minutes you could get a small explosive surprise. I am sure that he meant to say," Turn the control to Pilot, hold the Red button down and light the pilot with a match. Once it is lit, then you must hold the button down for thirty seconds to one minute. Next replace the burner compartment door and turn the control from Pilot to ON and set your temperature". When in doubt, call the gas utility.

That is what I had said, the button will not depress if the dial is in the on position, it will only depress if the dial is in the pilot position.
