Question

Just bought a new (used) house. Shower drain running a little slow. Turns out there is hard, gritty white stuff on the walls of the drain and reducing the diameter at the water line by about two-thirds. Guy at Home Depot recommended acid based toilet cleaner. No change. Afraid to try to chip it free for fear of either cracking the plastic pipe or clogging it up. Any ideas?
