Question

My Delta single lever faucet is leaking where the spout rotates on the base. I dismanted the faucet to the point where I was able to remove the spout. There are two large O-rings (top and bottom) which are apparently designed to form a seal to prevent this kind of leak. The faucet is only 18 months old and the O-rings look OK except that they don't stick out as much as I think they should. The spout was very easy to remove. Assuming that the O-rings need replacement, how do I do that?

You can replace just the orings. You can get a kit. Gently use a small screwdriver or the point of a pocket knife to get underneath them and pull them off or cut them off. Push the new rings over the valve. Be sure though your leak is not coming from the dome where the ball is. Sometimes this gets loose and allows water to leak giving the impression the spout is leaking.

How can I determine whether the dome is leaking or not?

The dome is just screwed on. If it is loose then tighened it but you DON'T need a 4ft pipe wrench to tighten it. Reassemble and turn on the water. If the leak stops you have your answer if not then you have the faucet back together until you can get to the store and get the orings.
