There is a tool called a dumbell, see below.

Use this to remove the drain strainer at the bottom of the tub.

Now do you have access to the underneith of tub, now remove the trip lever, the two screws on the overflow and pull this out, the drain is now disconnected.

Now get under tub and remove the old drain, I recommended you replace the trap at this time, cut the trap out, and by using a fernco a new trap and new drain assembly, this will give you the new drain for the tub.

Use putty on the new tub strainer boittom side for that seal, tighten eveything up and look for leaks.

It isn't so. Think about it. How would you pull the tub WITHOUT disconnecting the drain first??

Cool

I've used plier handles stuck down into the drain cover and a screwdriver to turn it all out. Works for me, but then again, I'm not a pro plumber. They know best. Good Luck!
