What is the purpose of a drum trap and how do you replace the drum trap cover?

A drum trap is just a different type of trap the was used often in the old days, there still in use today also. The cover is a standard 3" plug, standard thread, you can use a 3" clean out plug for it, just make sure the threads are clean, plastic threads are easy to cross if your not careful.

I mysef would just replace the entire trap with a standard trap.

Hold the PHONE JACK!

You can't just replace a drum trap with a standard P trap!!!!

The reason for this is that most drum traps in older homes are NOT VENTED.

If you want to replace a drum trap with a p trap, first you must insure that the drain is properly vented.

Drum traps will not siphon all the water out when not vented.
P traps can have all the water siponed out when not vented.

Do not, I repeat Do not replace with a p trap UNLESS the drain is properly vented.

The best would be to install a vent and a p trap, but this could be pretty expensive.

Unfortunately, there are still drum traps (PVC) on the market for replacement use only. They are no longer allowed by code.

I agree that replacing the drum trap with a standard P-trap is not always a good idea, but it is a situation call. You would need to take all the plumbing into affect.

You could also replace the drum trap with a p-trap, and if you cannot run a vent into the attic, you could use an AAV (Air Intermittance Valve) in place of a conventional vent. But it must be accessible for replacement from time to time.
