running toilet

My toilet will run several times during the day for no apparent reason. It only lasts 1-2 seconds. The seal in the tank appears tight. There is no problem when I flush the toilet. The tank empties and fills as always and everything goes down from the bowl as always. Since the flushing apparatus appears to work fine, I am not sure what to do next. I hate to call someone out for somewthing simple I could have done or should have known.

Thank you

Install new flapper--see if that clears up your problem..............

Either the float valve or the flapper valve can cause this.

Is the water level in the tank about 1" below the overflow tube? Does the tank water level drop or remain constant.

Put some food coloring in the tank and see if it appears in the bowl over time. If it does, it's probably the flapper (if you have one) or the flush valve gasket.

And just to cover the bases, so can that small little tube in the toilet tank, if it is inside the overflow tube and is down there too far. Some of the others that posted here already knew that. They just forgot.

Another way to monitor the water level in the tank, is to let the tank refill to high level, then draw a line a the exact point of water level. Check back in 15 mins. to 1/2 half hour and see how much the water level has gone down.

Smile Thank you!

Tried the food coloring. Leaked into toilet in no time. Replaced the flapper......problem solved.
Maybe I can learn to fix a few things.. Thanks for your advice and guidance.
