leaky pipe

The tiles on the ceiling on our first floor (located directly below the 2nd floor) bathtub fell off to reveal soaked wood and destroyed layers of paneling. A plumber told us that the holes cut for the fixtures were too big and not caulked, thus causing a leak. My husband cut plexiglass to make the holes smaller and caulked everything in the tub, but water is still dripping through the ceiling. The only access to the pipes is through the shower wall. Water only drips for showers, not for baths. How do we get the side of our shower off? Thank you for your help.

Sounds like there is much water damage, and needs attention asap, this is now the best time to gut the walls, fix the valve, and install a new surround, rot will set in if you don't do something real soon, and a wet wall will mildew and smell.

My husband can repair the damage to the ceiling, it's the plumbing we're not sure about. Do you have any suggestions on how to get in to see the pipe? We've only lived here 3 months. The guy we bought it from supposedly remodeled the house, but did a poor job. We don't have the money to hire someone to gut our walls. Please help.

I don't think you have a choice, when you have that much water to take out the ceiling below, this needs to be corrected, you say only when one takes a shower, that could be a badly sealed shower arm, that screws into the wall, or the riser is leaking when the shower is in use.
If it's the riser then remove the entire surround to get to this, or don't use the shower no more.
Me I'd think about a new surround and fix the valve and pipes before the new surround goes in.
The only way to the valve is through the front.
