Our toilet is evidently plugged and overflows when flushed. I have tried a plunger, which allows the water to drain but when flushed again, overflows. I have tried an auger, but can only get it to feed about three feet. It sounds like it is hitting something metal. Is there a trick to getting it to feed further? Any other recommendations?

Pull the toilet.
Pour a bucket of water in the drain to verify wether its the toilet or the drain line thats plugged. If its the drain line, clean it out before you reset the toilet. If its in the toilet, using a flashlight, with the toilet laying on its back look up into it, you should be able to see whats hung up,and remove it from here.
The metal you hit could be and elbow in the drain line.
