HELP! Simple toilet question

My toilet is clogged - I dropped a bunch of Q-tips in there. I've tried the plunger, but had no luck. The local hardware store guy suggested an auger. I've tried several times, but I can't seem to get it to snake down. It just coild back up. Any suggestions or tips on how to make this device work would be greatly appreciated.
