Foul septic smell coming out of drain pipe the washer machine is attached to?

For some reason a couple times a week a foul septic smell is released from the drain pipe the washer machine is attached to in the basement. I have no idea why this is happening and what I can do to fix the problem. Any information or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

That is usually an indication the trap (probably behind the wall) is emptying,,,,,,,

sometimes another fixture is on the same "line" like a large sink or toilet and the vent is plugged causing the water to be suctioned from the trap.

siphon breaker

Check out if a "siphon breaker" can be fitted here.... the comment about the trap being emptied is a good guess.... but depending how the venting was done in the walls this might not fix the problem without knowing it more....
