This really sounds stupid but the only way to describe noise is a farting sound when the toilet is flushed, last for a few minutes
Any ideas!

You either have high water pressure or a loose washer in your ballcock. If your water pressure is above 80 pounds install a pressure reducing valve, most likely if you install a fluidmaster 400A fill valve in your toilet tank it will solve the problem, be sure to adjust the height on this so the top of the fill valve is about an 1" above the overflow tube.
good luck

Red face

Would it also be possible for them to eliminate the "farting" sound by not having the shut-off valve all the way to the left(open)? Perhaps a couple turns to the right would reduce the pressure just enough to eliminate the sound, but not lengthen the amount of time to refill the tank.

Chris, turning the supply valve partially off will reduce the water flow through the valve, but NOT the water pressure. You can try it and see if it works, but my guess is that you will either have to replace the fill valve or the shut-off valve to cure the problem.

Hi Lefty,
I think your right on the money, I didn't think about the shut off having a loose washer, If this is the problem it will fart worse if you close it down a little and increase the water velocity through the valve.
Thanks, plumber john

Then I guess what we should do is resort to logic and probe exactly where the sound is coming from before twiddling knobs and valves. Once we know where the sound is coming from we can determine what needs adjustment/replacement.

Please refer to thread "Toilet BANG!". I stand vindicated about my valve theory.

The fluidmaster is cheap and easy to install, eliminate the possibilities, and find the probabilities.

Install a new fluidmaster and if it don't solve the noise then move on to the next possible cause.

Chris, the good news is that the parts to fix this problem shouldn't run you over about $20, total. Try the fluidmaster that Plumber 2000 suggested. If that doesn't fix the problem, then replace the shut-off valve to the tiolet. Or, try the shut-off valve first, then the fluidmaster. At this point, it is a 50/50 guess as to which one is the culprit. What we don't need is another blood bath in the Plumbing Forum!!
