Question

We are replacing our bathtub, and are having trouble getting the taps tight enough - they still move, even after tightening them as much as possible. Any handy tips on getting taps that won't move around?

Thanks.

Jar, I'm going to take a guess that you replaced your tub (or tub/shower) valve, and that the handles move around everytime you try to turn the water on or off. (Was that a good guess?) If so, did you attach the valve to a stud (or something equally solid) while you were installing it? It should have been solid BEFORE you started putting the finished wall over it. The trim escushions are not intended to hold it solidly in place. I hope I'm totally off base with my guess as to what your problem is, because if I'm right, you'll be tearing into the wall to anchor the valve. If I'm wrong with this guess, please repost with a little clearer explanation of the problem.

Sorry, I guess I wasn't clear enough (could be a transatlantic problem - I'm in Scotland).

The new bathtub has not yet been installed. The taps will be attached to the bathtub itself (which is of the ordinary plastic variety). The problem is that in tightening them, they still move around. We want to resolve this before we install the bathtub.

We thought about putting rubber washers between the nut and the plastic to get a better grip - is this a good idea?

Thanks again,

Jar

Yes as long as you shim on the backside of the shower, this will be fine. The rubber would be alright but maybe something that wont deteriorate over time would work better, brass or stainless steel washers, ect.
