Back Flow Valve -- Worth It?

How effective are the backflow/back water valves meant to prevent water from an overburdened main from coming up into your house?

Very effective, one thing thou if there is a backup on the system and you don't know it, say your doing laundry, then you might incounter the drains starting to backup.
