I need to change a water heater element. Should the tank be drained first. Do I just unscrew the element at the control panel on the hot water heater? Thanks for any help.

1st shut the power off, then drain it, then unscrew the element, and put the new one in, then fill the tank up, open a hot water faucet to get all the air out of the tank, then turn the power back on.

You'd be in for quite a lot of excitement if you took out the element without draining the tank first!
