Desperate help for floor and toilet

Help! My stool leaked so badly in made a hole in kitchen ceiling underneath.
I have pulled the stool, taken up layers of old tile. The subflo is bad. I took some of it up arounf stool to the joice. Am afraid to go farther as I do not know how much to cut out. Do I call a plumber?

Under the toilet was a flange that the toilet was bolted to. Can you describe that flange? Was it plastic or metal?
Was the wood under the tiles soft enough to scrape away with your fingernail? Was any of it so soft you could scrape it away with your finger nail?
Can you get us this info first so we know what we're dealing with? In the mean time, stuff a 7-11 BigGulp cup into the flange on the floor to prevent sewer gas from getting into your house.
