Hi:JMB
I am not a plummer but it sounds like your problem is a restricted or clogged roof air vent pipe.
If your able, climb on the roof and run a snake down the air vent line as far as it will go. You can then test it from up there if you have a garden hose that will reach up there.
Run some water down the line after clearing it with the snake and see if any of this helps. Be a good idea to have a helper stand by, at the toilet, just in case the water you run down the vent pipe backs up into the toilet.
Good Luck,

If it's not the drain, and it's not the toilet, the vent is the only thing left. The 5 gallon bucket you poured down the drain was probably not a realistic test, because it doesn't simulate the rate at which the toilet puts water down the drain, and because the open pipe is self vented.
Go with Tom's advice.
