Leaking Incoming Cold Water Line to Shower

I noticed mold building up in the cabinet behind the shower. I removed the sheetrock to gain access to the shower piping and found the leak. The fixtures are old and the cold water supply line coming down from the ceiling has a hair line crack about 1 to 2 inches near the fitting where the cold and hot water join.

My question is do I remove the fitting and then replace the entire cold water supply line, or can I cut it and join another piece with some kind of coupler? Of course it has to be threaded to fit back into the fitting, joining the hot water.

I am not a plumber and poor at describing.
