Moving Laundry Room upstairs
I am moving the washer and dryer upstairs and would like to know if the washer has to have a p-trap?

Absolutely. It needs a P trap, standpipe, and vent. Nowadays, a 2" drain is required, especially for some newer washers.
Once you have your plan together, feel free to pass it by the folks here. The experts can help with specific lengths, distances, and other requirements.

You may also need a plumbed drain pan if it will be over a finished area.
If your going to the 2nd floor, it may limit your ability to use a front loader. They spin so fast, vibrations can become a problem and are a common complaint.
