Question Leaking PVC to Brass

Hi everybody,

I tried to install a water pressure regulator in 1 inch SCH 40 PVC line going to yard sprinklers because the city pressure of 105 lbs. was spraying all over the place. It required a connection from PVC Ė slip joint to threaded brass of regulator housing (Wilkens). I used Teflon tape, about two rounds on the threads. Even tightened the PVC adapter to the housing (on low side) in the vice to where it was really tight. Didnít want to bust the PVC. I ended up with drip leaks on both sides, high (105 lb) and low (50 lb) side.

Should I have used some other sealant other than tape? What is the best?

Thanks in advance, justdoit007

Leaks

justdoit007: I use both on pvc to metal joints, three wraps of teflon tape and a fine coat of pipe dope on the top. Over tightened will cause leaks, luck,

It has been my experience (too much experience) that using tape alone on plastic threads is just asking for a leak. I always use Teflon tape AND Teflon paste. Rare to have a leak when using both.

One caveat, be sure the Teflon paste you use is compatible with the plastic, read the label.

I agree with using both Teflon tape and dope
