Simple Repair - Simple Question

I'm making a simple plumbing repair that requires me to shut off the water main at the street and drain the pipes in the house via sink faucets. My question is, will the water in the water heater drain as well? My guess is that it will not, as I believe that water from it must be drained from the unit itself. But, don't wanna be wrong and burn up my water heater. Thanks for the help.

Always turn off the electricity (electric heater) or turn the combination gas valve (gas heater) to the Pilot position before turning off the water supply. After turning the water supply back on run water from the faucets until no more air is evident before turning the electricity or gas back on.
