I have a front porch with routinely-killed hanging plants. Basically I seem to be genetically designed to turn every living plant creature into dust through water-negligence.
I am in need of suggestions for brands, and whether or not to concoct my own mechanism.
I also need to run the water from inside my house to use water-softened water (to avoid turning coloring my porch rails to rust).
1. What brand is best?
2. What kind of water timer?
3. How to I physically drill from inside the basement to the porch? Should this be as high up on the banding joist as possible?
THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

not sure about what you need or how to do it but i do know that you should not be using "softened water" to water your plants or your lawn. plants need the minerals in water and dont like the salt in softened water. you can use potasim in your softener but it is much more expensive than sodium

Yes, that makes sense, but the plants do "well" when watered by the softened tap water, it's just a matter of remembering it.
Either way, it's a show-stopper to not use softened water. The porch would turn orange in no time flat if using direct water. A *lot* of iron in this section of the country.
