Sewer line check valve?

My daughter's house is in an old neighborhood built in the fifties. A few years ago they put in a whole new sewer line from the house to the sidewalk(property line). Now there are problems with the city's part, but they refuse to take care of it. The problem is tree roots and they just cleared it out after a horrible back-up in their basement a few days ago.
I know there are check valves that they can install to prevent back-flow, but what kind? From what I can find out there are different ones. It sounds like the simple flappers can get blocked with solid waste. I hear there are better ones these days. Any suggestions?

It doesn't matter what kind of backwater valve you get, they all have certain problems. You have to realize that they will stop sewage from comming in from the street, but they also stop sewage from getting out if there is a back flow from the street. If you have a city sewer backing up you have no choice but to put one in, luck.
