Leaky shower.
#1

I have carpet in my bathroom and there is a wet spot infront of the shower. The carpet looks discolored around the edge of the shower. The spot appears only when used. I used it for about two weeks and the spot got bigger and bigger. I have not used it in about a week or so and the spot has dried. If it were a pipe I think that it would leak all the time and only get larger and not dry up. Do you think it could be the shower pan? The house is about 30 yrs old and it all looks original. How hard is a shower pan to replace? Can it be done by a DIYer? I was planing on redoing the sink and tiling the floor and shower. I was not planing on it so soon. If it is a poored in pan could it be patched with some thing?

I'm not a plumber, but the leak sounds like it may be coming from the shower door or the drain assembly at shower floor level to me. It also could be the pan or a leak in the tiles just above it, though.
Can you get under the shower (crawlspace?) to check the drain and pan out when running? Also, aim the shower at the door, shut it, and check that from outside the shower, too. Check the seal (plumber's putty?) under the drain attached to the floor. I would eliminate every other possiblity prior to getting into a new pan job. That can turn into major work, usually best left to a pro, unless you are very experienced at such things.
Good Luck! OG

The house is a one story and I have no crawl space as it is a concrete slab. The door proably leaks aroud the seal, but I do not point the head at the door. There is a peace of wall (that is tiled)between the bottom of the door and the floor on both sides on the wall. The grout lines on the out side have a light colored rust on them that will flake off. after I use the shower the top of the tiles are not wet so I don't think its the leaking though the door, but I will re-caulk and try it again. The grout is old and cracking in places.

Hey Warrior,
Have the shower pan tested by a plumber, or test it yourself. You'll find instructions at
