I need a washing machine. Its an older condo that doesn't have connections.I have had several plumbers out who don't want to touch it. My neighbor had one installed using the drain pipe from the upstairs toilet (his washer was installed downstairs). He couldn't remember who did it. A handyman said he could connect into the downstairs bathroom (through the drain pipe that the sink uses). This would be cheaper but I'm a little afraid of a backup.Another neighbor did it this way though and has had no problems. Which way is better and less risky? Thanks.

Most washers require a 2" standpipe for a drain. I have seen an 1 1/2 but with some problems of overflow. Seems to me you should connect into the main waste pipe. Check with your local building inspector or a fightish plumber. If a couple passed on it, a handyman solution may not be correct.
