Burying PVC water main line? Help.

I recently fixed a break in the joint of our water main that runs underground from the house to the meter. Now I need to bury this 3' deep PVC pipe. Recommendation for backfill? Add sand around the pipe? Thanks.

Do you know what caused this pipe break? Unusual to break one three feet underground unless hit when excavating something nearby.

If the fill coming from ditch is fairly clean, just go back with it. If you stacked it in a pile as you dug, the soil on top should be free of rock (assuming it was done right the first time). Main thing is to avoid placing larger sized rocks directly on pipe. As you backfill, make sure you pack down the dirt . . . if you donít have a tamp, just stomp it down with your boots and water in . . . do this about every foot of dirt you add into ditch. You'll still may need some extra dirt to get a nicely finished grade.
