diverter keeps coming out
#1

I have a shower with 3 knobs. The middle one is for the shower. One day, the whole middle assembly came out of the wall. A friend of mine bought some washers and put it back in. A couple days later it came out again. He put it back in and everything seemed fine. Now it came out again. It didn't look like he tightened it very much while putting it in. Do these have to be tightened very tight? I was thinking of putting it in myself, it just screws in doesn't it? Or is there more too it than that? Thanks.

The diverter valve and water supply valve assemblies need to be tightened with a plumber's valve socket that fits over the stem onto a hexagonal part of the valve assembly. (OR with a crescent wrench, IF you can reach the hex part that is not recessed back into the shower wall.)
Hand-tightening it won't do, as you're finding out. You shouldn't need any washers.
Borrow/buy a set of plumber's valve sockets (valves come in different sizes and one will fit yours).
Good Luck!
