Type of drain pipe material used to run down house exterior?

I'm using cast iron for my drain to reduce noise, but I don't recall ever seeing it run exposed down the face of a house. What sort of material is standard for this. Currently the house has threaded galvanized piping for that, but it's a old house. I was wondering if there is a new or preferred method with lighter weight pipe.

Any help would be great.

You don't see it because most codes do not allow it anymore

I'm not really up on plumbing codes, but around here I have seen PVC run up the side of the house as a remodel vent. I wouldn't do it if I could help it (mainly because it's ugly). You need to ensure though that it doesn't terminate near a window.
