gas fireplace chase
finally removed ugly 3D wall structure above gas fireplace. Boy did we open a can of worms, found partial or no bat insulation on chases walls. Cold air move more evident, always was cold air coming from fireplace area (had to cover with plastic when not in use) and wall was very cold. Without removing the entire wall and insert to insulate properly, would a closed cell spray foam application work in this area?

Is this a vented fireplace? If so you can install a firestop above the firebox that spans across the width and length of the fireplace chase. Many jurisdictions require this. You will need to frame up in the chase and install fire rated sheetrock to it and seal it with red firestop caulk. It is probably good you opened it up. Do it to control the cold air, and do it to prevent fire from spreading from floor to attic, or floor to floor.

Yes it is a vented fireplace, firestop is in place. Can closed cell spray foam (fire rated) be used instead of sheetrock. Do not have funds to dismantle entire wall and remove insert and nobody can fit in chase as it also contains cables and vent stack. Currently there is a 4x5 foot hole above the insert which does allow us to see side to side and floor to firestop.

How high is the firestop? Is it sealed on its edges, around the ventpipe, and cables? If not, certainly a fireproof sealant is in order to keep that cold air from bouncing down on you.
