Question Question on purposely distressing black iron pipe...

Hello!

I'm building a desk base out of 1" black iron pipe from a leftover home project. Can I do anything to lighten up the pipe so it's not quite as black and more like the fitting colors?

I'm tempted to fire away with a wire brush but I'm not sure if that'll start an endless process of flaking iron and possibility for rust, etc...

Let me know if you have any ideas, suggestions, thoughts - thanks!

I'd sand it and then prime and paint.

Is the existing black coating paint or some sort of chemical treatment on the pipe?
