Lever Shower Drain

I have a lever type shower drain. It has been hard to push the lever down, to let the water out, for a couple of months now. The other day, I pushed it down and the lever came loose from the plunger. Now the water will not drain. I have taken the lever assembly off and it comes out with the rod attached. The end of the rod has an eye on it that is still closed (i.e., it didn't straighten out). What can I do to get the plunger out of the drain pipe? I have used a coat hanger with a hook on the end, but it has not worked.
Thanks.

Try a good pair of needle nose pliers and and give a few quick pulls, it should pull out of the drain.

Can't get down there with pliers

Ican't get down there with pliers. The plunger is probably 8 inches down in the tube. When I look at where the lever plate was, the pipe curves down towards the drain. The plunger is down even with the drain in the tub.

If you can't remove it with a coat hanger, try something that is stronger then it, can you access the back side of the tub, if you can, dissassemble the overflow pipe.

Find some heavy duty wire, some that is stronger then a coat hanger. and bend a hook on the end of it, try that, if all else fails open the wall.

Plunger

Is it possible that the rod that is inside of the plunger has broken out? I am not familiar with how the eye of the lever rod onnects to the plunger. Is the plunger basically just a hollow cylinder with a rod through it for the lever rod to connect to? If this is the case, then I think that the rod in the plunger broke or tore out of the plunger. On the ohter hand, is there maybe a ring that connects the plunger rod to the lever rod eye?

Thanks.

I don't think it's broken, it's more solid brass and thicker brass then the rod that was connected to it.

Plunger

How well does that plunger fit in the drain pipe? Should I be able to pull it up easily, or will it take some work. I have hooked onto a couple of things in the drain pipe, but haven't been able to budge it. Is there anything that I may be hooking on that will damage the drain pipe even more. I don't have access to get into the wall, so I don't want to crack a pipe or fitting so that it causes a water leak that will be difficult to fix.

Thanks.

It should just pull out with a little elbow power, I don't think you will damage your drain.
