When I try to push the lever down to let the water out, the plastic plunger is hanging up on something in the pipe. What could be causing this? That is how I broke the rod from the plunger before. It was hard to push the lever down, so I pushed it down with my foot and the rod came disconnected from the plastic plunger. I installed the plastic plunger from my other tub, and the same thing occurs. What is making it this hard to open the drain? I have looked down the pipe with a dental mirror, and I see nothing that could be catching onto the plunger.

Convert the trip lever into a tip toe drain, you don't even have to access the back side of the tub.

Just replace the face plate and the drain that screw into the bottom of the tub.

Use the tool to remove the drain at bottom

Problem solved
