thanks plumber2000 for the advise on the toilet and tub drain. i adjusted the plug and all is well now. unfortunately one of the screws broke off when i was trying to remove it. my house is about 35 years old. do i have to drill the old one out. it is flush with the mount inside the wall..

I think there is a tool you can use called and easy-out, I think you can get one at an auto store, you drill a small hole for the easy-out to slip into, and then the easy=out will turn the broken screw out.
