The diverter for my shower/tub is leaking and
I was told that I would have to replace the entire
faucet (faucets + diverter) at a cost of around
$450. Could the problem be simpler than this, and
?

I assume this is a diverter that is a separate knob in between the hot and cold knobs. If so, it would be cheaper to just replace the guts of the diverter. You may need a stem socket set to remove the diverter stem:

Take the old diverter to Home Depot, Lowe's, plumbing supply or good hardware store for a replacement.
