How do i change these valves. I turned the valve from on to off and now it has a slow leak.I turned the valve back on it is still leaking, the washing machine valves have always been on I want to get into the habit of keeping them off when machine is not in use to avoid any problems with bursting hose lines.

What do they look like? Do they look kinda like this one or are the different looking?

You may just need to tighten up the packing nuts right under the handle area, try that 1st and see if it stops leaking.

Packing nuts

I can't find a picture to show what my leaking shut off valves look like. What are packing nuts?

Does it look like a shower valve, two handles and the hose connections are below the handle area.

If this is so, then remove the handles and the trim under it, you should now see the stem, the 1st nut on the stem is the packing nut, tighten it up.

Leaking valves

I am sorry if I don't understand. There is a hot and cold valve with the hoses connected to each. The only way I can think of to describe the valve is the handle is similar to a wagon wheel round with holes in it, something that you would find outside on your house for the hose. Sorry for the lame description. And how would you take this handle off.

Do you not see a nut right below the handle, tighten that up, see if that fixes it.

Is it leaking through the stem?

Go to Home Depot and ask for some stem packing string, loosen that nut all the way up and off, add some of that string and retighten it.

If that don't work then replace them with new shut offs.

Yes it is leaking from the stem. I'll try to get the nut off.
