shower drain relocation

Hi All,
I am in the middle of this project and pretty confused as to go about the idea i am trying to achieve. The question here is regarding relocating the shower drain.

There was a wall which i have gutted down in the bath and see this black pipe that is about 40 inches high and then connected to a bigger black pipe going all the way to the roof. Learnt that this is connected to the vent.
My questions are...
1. can this be eliminated if it is not required.
2. if required, can i drill such a big hole the joist. is this safe.
Any idea of better ways doing this would be of great help.
Attaching a picture which pretty much explains the project.
Thanks.

The vent is needed. You can probably get away with drilling a hole in a joist to relocate the drain.
