PVC slip joint nuts

When assembling pvc traps/fittings such as under a sink, should one use any thread compound on the fitting or nut? Some people say yes, since people tend to over tighten and the compound will help make a good thread seal.

What are your thoughs.

When new parts I use nothing (pvc) ... Hand tighten and after assembly run hot water. Then hand tighten some more. You will see you can get a 1/4 to 1/2 turn more.

Brass traps I use Teflon paste.

Although some older stubborn PVC leakers I have put a dab of paste on.... Sometimes add tape around the washer to make a Kind of packing.
