knocking in hot water pipe in tub when turned on

why are the pipes knocking when the water is turned on? What can be done to fix it? Can it be done by myself? I believe the pipes are copper.

Check for a loose washer on the bottom of the stem, a loose washer can vibrate and make pipes knock, shut the water off to the house before you take the stems out.
