Iron sewer pipes leaking?

I'm in the process of finishing my basement. My contractor is putting in a bathtub in a half bath that is down there now. When we got to the sewer line, the soil was getting damper and damper. He says that this is due to the iron pipes leaking down there and wants to go back a littler further and replace with PVC. Is this the case? Is the soil just moist back there? The house was built in 1960, and there are two of those "boot" sections of iron pipe there, one by the toilet and then another right behind it. I've never dealt with iron pipe and it is clear that the soil is wet there.

IMO take it back as far as you can and replace with PVC... Better to do it know then later... This in a slab?

Yeah, in a slab. The pipe looks pretty good aside from this though.
