Bathroom sink leaks at tailpiece

I got a slow water leak around the tailpiece under my bathroom sink. I've tried tightening the slip nut by hand against the rubber seal above since it seemed like it was a tad loose but it still leaks there, with water coming down the threads and down from there. What’s a good permanent fix to this?

Should have been silicone or plumbers putty under the rim of the drain.
I also use Teflon tape on the threads where the nut goes.

I will try that thanks. None of that currently. So I would apply the putty above the threads and the tape on the threads?
