Underground pipes and tree roots
#1
I'm laying new pipe from the house to the outside garage laundry area. The tree roots plugged up the old pipes. How can I prevent this from happening again? I was told that if after I lay the pipe, pour some rock salt around the pipe and the cover it up as usual. Is this Correct?

If you're using PVC or ABS plastic pipe with glued connections, roots cannot penetrate it like with the older types (cast iron, terra cotta, etc.), where the hairlike roots usually grow through old loose connections with deteriorated seals, or cracks and holes.
You don't need salt, or anything else, with new plastic drain lines.
Remember to slope the drain 1/4" per linear foot toward the main.
Wrap it up. Don't worry about. You should have no root problems.
Good Luck!
