I changed the stem washer in my bathtub about four months ago and it recently started dripping again. When I took the stem out today and examined the washer it seemed to be in okay shape. Had a few tiny grooves in it, but nothing that would cause the size of leak I have (so I assume). Question #1: Does the seat simply prevent the washer from corroding? Or is it possible to have a good washer but if the seat is bad, it will still leak? Question #2: I've heard it's pretty simple to change a seat. I have an older model tub (about 20 years old). After taking the stem out, I really can't see anything through the hole in the tile. There is something there that appears to be a pipe (guess it's the seat?) about 3/4" diameter. Obviously, I won't be able to see the seat, so I would have to feel my way with the seat wrench when changing it. My concern is that (because the hole in the tile is only about an inch diameter) that when I do unthread the seat I won't be able to pull it out, or worse yet, put it back. Any advice would be duly appreciated. Thanks!

Leaky faucets in basement sink and downstairs bath. I removed the screw from atop the faucet handle, but there is no visibe means of removing the faucet handle, i.e. no nut, just the threaded female opening for the screw. Any ideas?
