Orientation of gas supply for drip leg / sediment trap

I am installing a drip leg (i.e., sediment trap) for a water heater. The diagrams I have seen on the internet show the gas supply coming from above the tee fitting supplying the drip leg and water heater.

My question is:
Can I have the gas supply entering from the side of the tee fitting instead of the gas supply entering the tee fitting from above (as shown in the diagram above)?

Are you picturing a horizontal gas line, with the drip leg in the 'middle' of it? Sort of a "T" shape?

Please allow me to clarify.

What I mean is...
Can I have the following?
  • gas supply coming from the side (ex: left side of tee)
  • drip leg / sediment trap going down
  • gas going into appliance (ex: right side of tee)

This is for an attic furnace. If I am not mistaken, drip legs / sediment traps are required for furnaces.
