I am updating a old house and it has a house trap. 4" cast
Is this a nessary trap?, As my main waste line needs some updating and I would like to remove the trap going to 3" sch 40 and connecting one to the other with a Fernco

Yes you can do this, as long as you know each fixture in your house has it's own trap.

If the mainline is 4" you need to stay 4" and not reduce it down.

My house has only five fixtures in it , a 3" wast line is not large enough through the house? Even if the old cast is 4" running out of the house ?

You can use 3", it's large enough, the thing is, if there is 4" all the way to the toilet/s, between the trap and house, then you have to replace all that 4" to 3", at no point in a line can you decrease a drain line from a larger line, you can increase but not decrease.
